Dozens of Orange County Soccer Club (OCSC) fans, advertisers, and some of the club’s top executives took to Irvine City Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 9, to express opposition to a proposal that would potentially eliminate the club’s ability to play inside the Great Park.

While the council removed the study session item from the August 9 agenda prior to the meeting, local fans made their opinions heard during public comment for items that did not appear on the meeting’s agenda.

Fans expressed the fear that the proposal would ultimately evict the Orange County Soccer Club from Championship Stadium and give exclusive rights to the LA Galaxy for Division 3 use. Presented by the City Manager’s office, the proposal takes into consideration complaints from community groups over access to the facility.

James Keston, owner of Orange County Soccer Club, was one of the first people to address the council, adding that he was “saddened” by the circumstances.

“We love Championship Stadium, we love Irvine and more than anything else we are troubled by the series of events that have occurred over the past week,” he said.

Keston added that his team has worked to establish new terms with the city, but with no success.

“We have been pursuing new stadium negotiations for many years. We do not understand why the city would consider groups from outside Irvine — even outside Orange County — to play inside Championship Stadium,” he said. “We do not understand why when the local group OCSC has submitted multiple stadium partnership and stadium management proposals to the city over the past year — at the urging of the City Manager.”

In his speech, Keston questioned why the city would present terms to LA Galaxy when OCSC was the most qualified bidder during the RFP period.

“We cannot even get the city to sit down with us to discuss a longer-term stadium deal to keep us in Irvine,” he said. “Yet, the Los Angeles Galaxy were able to not only get the negotiations with the city of Irvine, they proposed a scenario under which they would have exclusive use of the stadium and exclude all other professional teams.”

With more than 30 public speakers addressing the issue, Irvine City Manager Oliver Chi said he felt like there might be some misunderstanding of the proposal.

“I think there have been some gross misstatements that have been put out regarding what was intended for tonight. I think there have been mischaracterizations related to the issues at hand, related to the overall stadium,” Chi said. “Initially, there was no decision tonight, on ultimately what we’re going to do with this stadium. There was a planned study session to review possible options, given that our existing MOU with the Orange County Soccer Club is said to expire in November of this year.”

Chi added that due to the frequency of professional soccer at the stadium, the city is continually fielding complaints about access from community groups.

“The challenge is this: the soccer stadium is a city-owned stadium, it was built with taxpayer money, it’s funded and maintained with city taxpayer money — we certainly heard concerns with issues from different groups in the community, that they have challenges accessing the stadium based on the way we’ve started to utilize it more for professional events,” Chi explained.

While many expressed their will to protest the potential arrival of the LA Galaxy, Chi said that a deal with the Los Angeles-based team never existed, only discussions. He also added that OCSC was kept in the loop during the decision-making process.

“There was no deal with the LA Galaxy that has been contemplated — there have been discussions with LA Galaxy. It’s not accurate to stipulate that the soccer club wasn’t aware that those conversations were happening,” Chi said. “We kept OC Soccer Club and their representatives in the loop on the decision-making process, let them know that this was a chance to engage with the City Council in a discussion of the options.”

The item was pulled, according to Chi, because the United Soccer League is now in litigation with Major League Soccer and Orange County Soccer Club requested to postpone all discussions until the behind the scene issues are resolved and a transparent conversation can be accomplished.

“We were informed that the USL and MLS are currently engaged in some kind of litigation and OC Soccer Club sent the LA Galaxy a strongly worded legal letter, which preceded and precipitated our request at the staff level to withdrawal that item until the issue has been resolved,” Chi explained.

This is a developing story.

Both hemp plant and cannabis plant have been very useful in treating various ailments. The cannabinoids present in hemp and cannabis extracts are the major factor responsible for their medicinal effects.

Coronavirus disease has been troubling the whole world for more than two years. Even though there are vaccines and medicines, the coronavirus disease is still prevailing in society. Many studies are conducted to find whether cannabinoids can help with Covid-19 disease.

In this article, we are discussing the possibility of using CBD against coronavirus disease.

Can CBD Really Help With Covid-19?

According to a study conducted by Oregon State University, it is found that some cannabinoid acids can bind with spike proteins of Covid-19. This is highly promising as the blocking of spike proteins disables the coronavirus to infect the host human being. These spike proteins are the same spike proteins that are targeted by the currently used covid-19 vaccines. The compounds that were highlighted in this study are cannabidiolic acid (CBDa) and cannabigerolic acid (CBGa). These two acids are abundantly found in hemp and possibly be used in future covid-19 medicines.

Many new variants of the coronavirus are developing and this causes a major headache in the medical field. The proliferation of COVID-19 can be effectively controlled by CBDa and CBGa. Scientists hope that by modifying CBDa and CBGa using today’s medical technology, they can provide resistance against future variants.

Are Cannabinoid Acids And CBD The Same?

No, they are not the same. Acidic cannabinoids (CBDa) are found in the hemp plant. Due to its acidity, it is difficult for it to bind with our endocannabinoid receptors, and hence doesn’t show any therapeutic benefits. So the cannabinoid acids are converted to a non-acidic form of CBD by the decarboxylation process. Non-acidic CBD is widely used in all CBD products for its health benefits.

How Can You Include CBDa And CBGa In Your Diet?

Both CBDa and CBGa are oil-soluble cannabinoids that our body can process. Whole hemp extract tinctures are available and by consuming this product, you will get your required cannabinoid acids.

Full-spectrum CBD oil can also be used. There are many CBD products in the market that are made using full-spectrum CBD oil and these include CBD edibles, CBD vapes, etc. Don’t go for broad-spectrum CBD products and CBD isolates as both of them have inferior entourage effect compared to full-spectrum CBD oil.

In conclusion, CBD is a potential candidate for COVID-19 medicines in the future. Many studies are progressing on this topic and we can hope for a positive result.

Inspired by childhood memories of his mother’s steaming-hot egg rolls sizzling in a pan, Irvine resident Foo Nguyen has cooked his way into the finals of PBS’s Great American Recipe Cooking Show.

Irvine Weekly had a chance to connect with the Great American Recipe finalist before the winner is officially revealed on Friday, Aug. 12. While Nguyen could not dish on the winner of the PBS competition, he shared some insight into what it’s like being an at-home-chef on such a big stage.

For context, the Great American Recipe Cooking Show is an eight-episode series, hosted by a panel of celebrated personalities – Alejandra Ramos, Tiffany Derry, Leah Cohen and Graham Elliot – in which contestants face off in two 30-minute cooking segments, and one 90-minute elimination challenge.

The show focuses on aspects of culinary multiculturalism from various regions of the nation. Finalists are competing for a chance to be on the cover of a cookbook with other professional chefs and Great American Recipe contestants.

Foo Nguyen

The Great American Recipe/PBS

Nguyen, who is a stand-up comedian, describes an emotional bond with cooking, something he attributes to his mother. Growing up in Ohio, Nguyen’s story begins with humble beginnings. But thankfully, he says, his mother’s home-cooked meals became a trusted source of nurture and nature.

“I got involved in cooking because of my mom. I come from a very large family – my parents have eight kids; five sisters, and I have two brothers. My mother made all three meals, including snacks. It was rare that we went to restaurants,” he said. “My siblings and I grew an interest in it [cooking] – there was an emotional tie to it because we come from a large family we don’t get to sit down for meal very often.”

In searching for contestants, PBS reached out to Nguyen after finding his Facebook page. While he said he doesn’t post food often, he does take pride in his at-home chefism. On the show, Nguyen leaned heavily into his Vietnamese roots, adding in some Midwestern flare to pay respect to his youth.

“I tried to incorporate my culinary life experiences. The types of dishes that I cooked were influenced by my Vietnamese background that was shared through my mother, and the Midwest,” he said. “My youthful years I was raised in Sandy, Ohio, then I moved to Chicago and spent about 12, 13 years in Chicago – that’s where I met my wife.”

In terms of a standout dish, Nguyen said he was able to cook a rendition of his mother’s Vietnamese egg rolls during the competition.

“The Vietnamese egg roll is emblematic of who I am as a cook, and who I am as a foodie, and why I love food – period,” he said. “That was her way of sharing love and appreciation for all the people that helped us assimilate into this beautiful country.”

Locally, Nguyen and his wife will be starting a meal prep company that will be servicing Irvine and the surrounding areas, he tells Irvine Weekly. He also will be doing more to showcase cooking on social media.

Nguyen encouraged people to find him on social media via Facebook, TikTok and Instagram, each with the @FooNguyen user handle.

“I’m posting live cooking shows on social media, where I’ll be hosting cooking classes,” he said. “I’m also writing a one-man show about food and my direct relationship with food, using my comedic and improv background from Chicago, and how food from a comical observation — how I see it perceived in our culture.”

The final episode of The Great American Recipe will air on PBS on Friday, Aug. 12, check local listing for showtimes.

Newly published data shows that legal cannabis programs can curb the use of synthetic cannabis over time.

Synthetic cannabis is a problem for everyone, affecting those who are for and against cannabis legalization. While people who oppose legal cannabis are concerned with people’s health and with what remains unknown about cannabis, proponents of legal cannabis claim that these programs can curb the use of synthetic cannabis.

A new data review supports these claims, finding that states with legal marijuana programs had fewer instances of synthetic cannabis use.

The findings were published in the journal Clinical Toxicology, which analyzed data from the National Poison Data System and discovered over 7,600 exposures to synthetic cannabis through the years 2016 to 2019. Researchers say that about 65% of users required medical attendance and recorded 61 deaths. Most importantly, state level medical cannabis programs were responsible for decreasing the use of synthetic cannabis over time.

Synthetic cannabis are man-made drugs with high toxicity levels, designed to produce the high of cannabis without the medicinal benefits. It has been linked with mental and physical damage and even the death of some users.

RELATED: The Danger Of Synthetic Cannabinoids

Researchers who conducted the study divided the data into three categories: permissive states, medical states, or restrictive states. States that experienced the most significant drop were permissive ones, with medical states following closely behind.

In an accompanying statement, the study’s authors said that these findings support what proponents of legal cannabis have been saying all along — having an option for legal cannabis put limitations on the black market and can result in healthier options for people.

“Based on both past research and this current study, it’s evident that users who have a choice to use a less toxic product would potentially do so,” said Tracy Klein, co-author of the study.

Synthetic cannabis is illegal in all states and is commonly known as Ak-47, K2, Spice, Scoobie Snacks, Mr. Nice Guy, and more alternate names. The drug produces a similar high to that of cannabis and is undetected in most standard drug tests, which is likely why there’s a market for it.

Cannabidiol is an active chemical compound in plants of the cannabis sativa genus, namely hemp, and marijuana. Cannabidiol is the main non-mind-altering component of cannabis, and it is also known as CBD. The popularity of CBD has been growing over the last few years. For this reason, CBD has been put in various products, including gummies, oils, and pills. It is used to treat various health conditions in human beings and even pets.

The substance has also been used to make CBD tinctures. These are a combination of water, alcohol, and cannabidiol. Some producers also utilize plant-based oil or vinegar, alcohol, plus even glycerin to make CBD tinctures. The output is a very potent mix, which you can apply with a dropper under the tongue. In this context, this is known as the sublingual application of cannabidiol.

Should you get CBD tinctures from any legal drugstore or dispensary in your area? The answer may depend on how you prefer to take cannabidiol. That said, CBD tincture has many benefits. Here is a list of six health benefits you can get by consuming these CBD products. Depending on how you do it, one or a combination of the following may be compelling enough for you to get CBD tinctures.

It Controls Seizures

People who have epileptic seizures are seeking solutions. Some individuals have epilepsy with seizures that are controlled, but others are fighting severe epilepsy. Thanks to research and technological improvements, cannabidiol has been triumphantly effective in managing epileptic seizures.

Cannabidiol tinctures are among the best choices when it comes to treating these seizures. CBD will be absorbed into the body in just under a minute. You do not even have to consume many products for CBD to be beneficial. So, it is not just the most useful and effective product, but it is also among the most affordable choices for epilepsy.

It Has The Maximum High Bioavailability

In this context, the term ‘bioavailability’ means the rate and level at which CBD is absorbed into the flowing blood. The form of cannabidiol product you consume and the way in which you do it will be factors in determining CBD’s bioavailability. When it comes to this, cannabidiol tinctures are the best CBD goods you can purchase. This way, you can experience the maximum benefits of cannabidiol without having to absorb more CBD products.

Be cautious of how you consume tinctures, though. After applying a drop of CBD tincture on the tongue, be sure that you are not swallowing it. There is no danger in doing so, but as a result of this action, it will take longer for CBD to be taken into the body.

The quickest way for it to be taken in is through your tongue because then it need not go through every other organ.

It Helps To Treat Diabetes

Diabetes patients have difficulty controlling the levels of sugar in the body. Diabetes is an inflammatory issue. Cannabidiol has anti-inflammatory properties, which make tinctures useful for managing sugar levels and diabetic symptoms.

Do not forget to take the purest type of cannabidiol for diabetes and to have the least possible dose of CBD. It is best to ask your doctor which the best dosage of CBD is.

It Does Not Make You Feel High

Unlike its cannabinoid cousin namely tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not give the user a psychoactive ‘high’.  So you will get the properties of CBD, thanks to the high potency of the substance, but it will not get you a high. There is growing evidence that cannabidiol is not addictive and that it is safe to consume. So, it a natural alternative to medications for a wide range of health issues, including insomnia and anxiety.

It Helps Improve Sleep

CBD tinctures are extremely potent, and it is among the most effective aids for sleep issues such as insomnia. By taking just some drops of the tincture sublingually, you will start feeling the effects of cannabidiol.

When cannabidiol is absorbed into the body, the substance will interact with your endocannabinoid system (ECS). This will help to make homeostasis or a rather solid-state of equilibrium, which then will help you to have a better sleep at night.

Insomnia tends to occur due to a hormonal imbalance, which makes putting the human body at rest tricky. The absorption of cannabidiol will address this issue adequately.

It Eases Pain

Cannabidiol works to relieve pain. Owing to the quick and smooth absorption of CBD, tinctures have shown to be useful in easing pain. CBD tinctures interact with both the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, which help to control the pain-causing inflammation.

By taking CBD and following an anti-inflammatory diet, you could fight inflammation and the pain associated with it. The cannabinoid is a potent anti-inflammatory agent.

The “Whiskey Room” is open at Lakeshore in Irvine.

On Wednesday, Aug. 9, the well-known Orange County restaurant pair – Bosscat Kitchen & Libations and TEN Sushi + Cocktail Bar – will celebrate a dual grand opening for new locations at Business Park, Lakeshore in Irvine.

To celebrate the completion of a two-year construction process, the eatery-duo will be hosting live music, whiskey tastings and more.

Leslie Nguyen, co-founder and creative director for Bosscat and TEN, who is also professionally known as Miss Bosscat, shared her excitement for the grand opening, adding that the process has become a “dream come true.”

“This process has been incredible,” she said. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be able to put such creativity in motion and watching people experience the space has been a dream come true!”

Located less than one mile from the previous location on MacArthur Blvd. and Main St. on the Irvine/Newport Beach border, Bosscat Kitchen & Libations Lakeshore worked to maintain the same contemporary aesthetic as the Newport Beach location.

Designed like a modern whiskey room, the establishment features more than 5,000 square feet of restaurant space and 1,200 square foot outdoor patio. TEN Sushi and Cocktail Bar Lakeshore location is just under 3,000 square feet with an 850 square foot outdoor patio space.

A few months ago Irvine Weekly spoke with JT Reed, who is partnering co-founder of Bosscat and TEN Sushi.

Reed explained that he was proud of the decade of work the restaurant duo (speaking of both restaurants and his relationship with Nguyen) had accomplished in Orange County.

However, Reed admits that he had doubts about lasting past the 10-year lease the team signed in Newport Beach when the project opened in 2012.

“One of the biggest things I’ve learned over the last eight years is that you have to be innovative with your brand, not just your food and drinks,” Reed said. “To have staying power you need to be constantly evolving and on the ball at all times.”

Nonetheless, Reed is excited about the opportunity for change and to begin a new chapter in Irvine.

“I get asked a lot about why we made this transition from Newport to Irvine and it’s a big shift for us,” Reed said. “We had known that the landlord at MacArthur was working to redevelop that space which provided us this unique opportunity to find our new home. We are thrilled to bring life back into the campus and it’s thrilling to see so many people back in the office.”

Lakeshore is located at 18101 Von Karman Ave.

The Irvine Police Department has announced the arrest of a 45-year-old Irvine woman who was captured on video allegedly poisoning her husband.

The woman, Dr. Yue Yu, MD, a Mission Viejo dermatologist, was reported to the Irvine Police Department by her husband on August 4.

In a statement, IPD said the man reported a month of prolonged illness and suspected he was being poisoned by his wife. In order to obtain proof of his suspicion, the man set up video surveillance which eventually captured his wife adding toxic substances to items he consumed.

“The victim captured video evidence supporting his suspicion and turned it over to police,” the statement read. “Irvine Police Detectives interviewed the suspect, 45-year-old Yue Yu, and served a search warrant at the home she shares with the victim. Yu was arrested for poisoning her husband and booked at Orange County Jail.”

While the man is expected to recover from the poisoning, he sustained what Irvine police called “significant internal injuries.” A motive for the alleged poisoning has yet to be disclosed.

In an email to Irvine Weekly, Irvine Police Sergeant Karie Davies said that due to the ongoing investigation IPD would not be releasing video, adding that the videos and photos of the incident were not released by IPD nor the Orange County District Attorney’s office.

Court records indicate the man, Jack Chen, has filed a restraining order against Yu. A hearing date for domestic violence is set for August 18.

A new study shows evidence of intermittent fasting, especially when limited to these hours.

A new study found an efficient way of losing weight. The research, published in JAMA International Medicine and conducted by researchers of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, found that one of the most efficient ways of losing weight was “early time-restricted eating (eTRE),” a method that limits people’s food intakes to certain hours of the day.

The clinical trial was randomized and conducted on 90 subjects that lived in the United States and had obesity. All participants were between the ages of 25 to 75, with a majority of women. It was conducted between the years 2018 and 2020.

A New Study Shows How Metabolism Impacts Weight Loss

The study found that participants who limited their eating to the hours of 7 am and 3 pm lost about 5 pounds more when compared to other participants. These participants also had lower blood pressure, with researchers concluding that the technique likely helped treat hypertension and obesity.

While it may sound extreme to consume foods only between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., this technique is nothing new and is commonly known as intermittent fasting. Researchers claimed that if participants stuck to this schedule for 5 days a week, they still reported benefits.

Still, researchers claim the study had a limited scope, especially since it was only conducted on people with obesity. “Our study has a few limitations, including being modest in duration, enrolling mostly women, and not achieving our intended sample size, partly owing to the Covid-19 pandemic,” they wrote.

They plan on expanding the study to envelop a wider scope of people and to develop a clearer picture of intermittent fasting.

RELATED: The Connection Between Intermittent Fasting And Your Endocannabinoid System

Aside from helping people lose weight, the practice helped treat subjects’ fatigue,  depression, and made them feel more energized. While no one should make abrupt changes to their diet based on one study, the evidence joins a large body of work that highlights the strengths of intermittent fasting and of consuming meals at the right times.

Canker sores are a form of small ulcers that can develop inside your mouth. They can be painful and if not treated properly, these sores can make your life miserable. OTC medications are usually taken to control this condition, but they can lead to different side effects when taken for too long. Hence, their use is not always recommended. But you can now control canker sores with the aid of a natural remedy called CBD. This compound can be greatly beneficial for you to control the discomforts caused by canker sores naturally.

What Are Canker Sores?

Canker sores are small ulcers that form inside your mouth. They can appear grey or white with red-colored edges. The sores resulting from this condition are usually found in areas like inside the cheeks, on the tongue, or inside the lips.

If the canker sores are minor, they can heal on their own in almost a week. This condition is different from cold sores that can develop outside the mouth. Canker sores form inside the mouth and form as a result of oral irritation. It is not contagious and may take weeks to heal. The Irvine City Council has opted not to discuss an agenda item during its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 9, that would grant the LA Galaxy exclusive rights to the soccer stadium inside the Great Park for Division 3 use.

If approved, the move would ultimately evict the Orange County Soccer Club from Championship Stadium, a facility it has used since 2017.

Other changes include replacing the stadium field’s natural turf with artificial turf, which would allow the venue to host more games at various levels.

A memo found in the LA Galaxy partnership proposal indicated that there was a consensus among community groups that Champion Stadium is difficult to access. Due to the exclusive contract with OCSC, community groups are given access about 80 days per year.

Options for changes in the operational model of Championship Stadium include continuing with the current model — 40 days of pro soccer, 80 days of community group access, and 12 weeks of turf rest. The second option would be to partner with the LA Galaxy, according to a memo.

“LA Galaxy I has expressed interest to play their home games at Great Park and is requesting confirmation of the City’s interest to pursue a partnership by August 12, to allow sufficient time to secure an alternate location for their upcoming season, in the event the City is not interested in pursuing a partnership,” the memo read.

However, the club released a statement suggesting that the proposal involving LA Galaxy was done without input or feedback from OCSC, according to club owner James Keston.

“In response to the intended proposal, which was developed without OCSC’s input or awareness, the club is exploring its legal and contractual options, including whether the Galaxy – whose reserve team, LA Galaxy II, currently plays in the USL Championship – are in breach of USL rules,” Keston said. “The LA Galaxy is prepared to offer compensation to the City of Irvine to drive OCSC, and all other local men’s and women’s pro teams in OC, from their home stadium in the Great Park.”

Jake Edwards, President of the United Soccer League, also expressed displeasure about the situation.

“The USL is disappointed by the news that the City of Irvine would even consider terminating Orange County SC’s tenancy at Championship Soccer Stadium in Great Park and provide exclusive use to the LA Galaxy’s developmental team. In response, we are working closely with OCSC to explore legal and contractual options,” Edwards said.

The item was listed as a “study session” on the August 9 agenda. However, it was removed on Monday.

In a text message with Irvine Weekly, Irvine Councilmember Tammy Kim said she wasn’t involved in day-to-day operations with the item, but that the council was currently in “wait-and-see” mode.

Kim directed additional questions to the city manager’s office. An email to the city manager’s office was not returned by the time of publication.

OCSC released a statement on Monday, Aug. 8, explaining that the city informed the club that the City Council would not be discussing the item. However, fans were encouraged to attend the City Council meeting to show support.

“This is a small step forward, but it does not change anything. The threat of LA Galaxy evicting us from our Irvine home remains and it does not change the fact that OCSC still has complete uncertainty over our future in this Stadium,” the statement read. “We would like to thank our fans, and fans of all those other teams across the country – including so many Galaxy fans – for the passion and kindness they have shown us in the past 72 hours in our fight to keep us from being evicted from our home.”

This is a developing story.
